Program Overview
Students can customize their degree with elective courses and pursue a joint degree option with the Department of History. The program requires successful completion of 36 credit hours, a "B" or better in core courses, and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Program Outline
Students complete a common core of courses, including:
- LIS 7000 Information and Society (3 credits)
- LIS 7004 Management of Information Organizations (3 credits)
- LIS 7008 Information Technologies and Systems (3 credits)
- LIS 7009 Understanding Research (3 credits)
- LIS 7010 Organization of Information (3 credits)
- LIS 7011 Information Behavior (3 credits) In consultation with their advisors, students select additional elective courses to fulfill their degree requirements.
- Successful completion of at least 36 semester hours (18 hours of core courses and 18 hours of elective courses).
- Completion of the program within five years. To graduate, students must achieve a "B" or better in all core courses and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all coursework within the program.
Other:
The program offers a joint degree option in conjunction with the Department of History, allowing students to earn both a Master of Arts in History and a Master of Library and Information Science simultaneously by completing 60 credit hours. The joint degree program includes:
- Elective courses in the School of Library & Information Science that can be applied toward the MA in History: Any two three-hour graduate-level courses focused on history or archives management.
- Elective courses in the Department of History that can be applied toward the MLIS: Any two three-hour graduate courses at the 7000-level in the Department of History.
