Required Courses:

  • Proseminar: This course is mandatory for PhD students in the Language & Society track.
  • Research Courses: Students must take three research courses from a list that includes options in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Optional Courses: Students must take eight optional courses from the Language and Society areas of concentration.
  • These include courses in French phonetics, Old Provençal, special topics in French language and literature, and linguistics.
  • Language Requirement: Students must demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language other than French before the general exams.

Other:

  • Minor Field: Students may choose a minor field in a specific department or discipline other than French, or an interdisciplinary field.
  • Requirements to Maintain Candidate Status: Students must enroll in FREN 9000 Dissertation Research after the general exam.
  • Time Limits: The Graduate School limits the PhD completion period to seven years.
  • Graduate Minor in French Studies: Doctoral students in other departments may obtain a graduate minor in French Studies by taking nine hours of graduate coursework in the Department.
