Program Overview


The Master of Arts in Theatre program at the University of Central Florida equips students with advanced knowledge of theatre theory, history, and practice. The program offers a rigorous curriculum with both a Theatre Studies and Musical Theatre concentration, emphasizing critical thinking, dramaturgical skills, and creative practice. Students will culminate their studies with a scholarly thesis and prepare for careers in various theatre roles, including dramaturg, teaching artist, and theatre educator.

Objectives:

  • Deepen knowledge of theatre theory, history, and practice.
  • Develop critical thinking skills through research and creative work.
  • Enhance dramaturgical skills through production work.
  • Apply theoretical frameworks to creative practice.

Program Description:

  • The program offers a rigorous course of study with a minimum of 39 credit hours, culminating in a scholarly thesis.
  • Students can choose between a full-time or part-time study schedule.
  • The program requires 30 credit hours of core courses and 9 credit hours of elective Theatre courses.
  • Students must select either Theatre Studies or Musical Theatre as their concentration.
  • The Musical Theatre concentration can be completed fully online/remotely, although not all elective options or program prerequisites may be offered online.

Assessment:

  • Comprehensive Theatre Exam: Administered at the end of coursework.
  • Students are allowed two attempts.
  • Thesis: A written thesis is required.
  • The thesis proposal must be approved in advance.

Other:

  • Students must maintain a minimum "B" (3.00) overall Theatre GPA to continue in the major.

  • Continuation in the MA program requires a positive annual evaluation.
  • All graduate students must consult with an area advisor.
