About Program

Program Overview

UCF's 30-credit Master's in Robotics and Autonomous Systems equips students with expertise in computer vision, machine learning, control systems, hardware design, and software programming for robotics. Students can choose a thesis or non-thesis option and select electives from a wide range of restricted courses. Upon graduation, they are highly sought after in the growing robotics industry as Mechanical Engineers or Robotics Engineers.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Master of Science in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (MSRAS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) equips students with the skills to analyze, design, and develop emerging robotic and autonomous platforms. These platforms encompass technologies and concepts from various disciplines, including electrical and electronic hardware, autonomous control, computer vision, machine learning, manipulation, mechatronics, autonomous vehicles, and medical robotics. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing field of robotics and autonomous systems.

Outline:

The MSRAS program is a 30-credit hour graduate program that offers a thesis option. Students can replace 6 credit hours of technical electives with thesis credits. The program structure includes:

  • Required Courses (12 credit hours):
  • Perception:
  • CAP 5415 - Computer Vision (3 credits)
  • Cognition:
  • Choose one of the following:
  • CAP 5610 - Machine Learning (3 credits)
  • EEL 5825 - Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition (3 credits)
  • Action:
  • Choose one of the following:
  • EEL 5669 - Introduction to Robotics and Autonomous Vehicles (3 credits)
  • EEL 5690 - Medical Robotics (3 credits)
  • Students can take both courses in the Action set, with one counting as a required course and the other as an elective.
  • Hardware: EAS 5407C - Mechatronic Systems (3 credits)
  • Elective Courses (18 credit hours):
  • Students must earn at least 12 credits from a list of restricted electives, each worth 3 credit hours.
  • The elective list includes courses in computer vision, machine learning, robotics, control systems, and related fields.
  • Students can choose to complete a thesis, which will count for 6 credit hours of restricted electives.
  • Thesis/Nonthesis Option (6 credit hours):
  • Thesis Option:
  • Students can earn up to 6 credits through a Master's Thesis Course (CAP 6971, EAS 6971, EEL 6971, or EML 6971).
  • Nonthesis Option: Students must complete at least 6 additional credit hours of electives from the list mentioned above.

Careers:

The MSRAS program prepares students for a variety of careers in the robotics and autonomous systems industry, including:

  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Robotics Engineer

Other:

The program is powered by UCF's expertise in its research centers, including the Institute for Simulation and Training, Center for Research in Computer Vision, the Artificial Intelligence Initiative, Biionix, and the Disability, Aging, and Technology cluster. Upon graduation, students will have a strong foundation in computer vision, machine learning, and control systems, and will be able to design hardware and program software for mobile robots.
