Program Outline

Degree Overview:

DePaul's MS in Taxation (MSTAX) program is one of the first master's programs in taxation in the U.S. It is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in tax accounting. The program is structured for working professionals and enhances their understanding of complex tax statutes, regulations, cases, rulings, and the Internal Revenue Code. Students can choose to take one or two classes per quarter and complete the program within two to three years, or they can go full-time to complete the program in one year. Many students also take a quarter off during busy periods, such as the winter tax season.

Teaching:

The program features recorded lectures with weekly opportunities to engage with instructors in "live" virtual sessions. Students can also engage with faculty and other students through collaborative and engaged learning. The program is taught by experienced tax industry experts, such as Senior Instructor and MSTAX Program Director Kent Klaus. Klaus has spent several years helping tax accountants develop their expertise and has led the Global Employer Services (GES) practice in Chicago at Deloitte. He also serves as a member of Kellstadt's Dean's Advisory Council and has directed the implementation of an executive-in-residence program, a student mentoring program, and classroom presentations by accounting executives.

Careers:

MS in Taxation alumni achieve some of the highest career advancement opportunities. Students in the program are consistently recruited by Chicago's major firms and organizations, including KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, and BDO. According to program statistics, 88% of Taxation master's degree graduates were employed, continuing their education or pursuing other goals within six months of graduation, with a median salary of $62,250.

Other:

The MSTAX program is offered both on-campus and online. The online program features small class sizes and is tailored to meet the needs of busy schedules. DePaul's School of Accountancy & MIS alumni society—Ledger & Quill—is one of the largest accounting alumni groups in the nation, providing a strong network for graduates. The School of Accountancy & MIS also offers scholarships to students pursuing their master's in Accountancy, Taxation, or Audit and Advisory Services.
