Program Overview


This 8-session course, taught by Seattle-based photographer Winnie Westergard, immerses students in the historical wet plate collodion process. Participants learn the skills to create unique Tintypes and Ambrotypes, develop black-and-white film, and gain knowledge of the origins of photography. The course combines theoretical and practical aspects, fostering both technical expertise and an appreciation for the art form's rich history.

  • Content:
  • Students will learn the wet plate collodion process to produce images on tin tiles or plates.
  • Participants will learn the skills necessary to create successful Tintypes (metal plate) and Ambrotypes (glass plate) photos.
  • Participants will learn basic large format camera operations and simple studio lighting setups.
  • Participants will grow their photographic skills that also apply to modern techniques.
  • In addition to learning the historical collodion process, participants will cover basic skills such as black and white film processing and beginning darkroom technique.
  • Participants will learn how this process evolved along with the fascinating beginnings of photography that produce unique portraits and photos even today.
  • Structure: The course will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of tintype and ambrotype photography.
