Program Overview

This online program prepares professionals to become Supervisors of Curriculum and Instruction, responsible for supervising instruction, developing curriculum, and conducting educational research. It includes a 360-hour internship and is designed for busy professionals seeking flexibility and practical knowledge from adjunct faculty who are educational practitioners. Candidates must have five years of certified school experience and a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be recommended for certification.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

A Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction is a district-wide specialist who works across all grade levels of a school entity and is responsible for the following duties:

  • Supervising instruction and evaluating staff as designated by the school superintendent
  • Designing and developing curriculum, learning materials and innovative educational programs
  • Overseeing the piloting of instructional programs
  • Directing and conducting basic or applied educational research

Assessment:

  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement on assessments (i.e., Praxis) is required for the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to issue the Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction certification
  • The Gannon University School of Education recommends candidates for certification upon successful completion of the program and review of the candidate's application on the Teacher Information Management System (TIMS).
  • Candidates must have completed required courses, have five years of satisfactory certified school experience in an instructional area, and attained a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be recommended for certification by Gannon University.
  • Candidates are required to successfully complete a 360-hour Mastery Internship to be eligible for certification.

Teaching:

  • An online program that gives busy professionals the opportunity to complete their coursework with much more flexibility than a traditional face-to-face program.
  • The program includes an on-site 360-hour district-wide supervisor of curriculum and instruction capstone internship.
  • Personal contact with Gannon University advisors throughout the internship process, meeting face-to-face and online on a regular basis.
  • Adjunct faculty members who are also educational practitioners.
  • This provides a pragmatic link between theoretical applications and present-day instructional practices and regulations. Gannon's adjunct faculty is comprised of curriculum supervisors, superintendents, and principals who present a realistic and firsthand view of theoretical models that are valid and applicable in today's classrooms.

Other:

This online program requires the candidate to take 9-17 credits based upon a transcript review, including evidence of prior graduate course work in curriculum and assessment. Should the candidate show no evidence of prior graduate course work in curriculum and assessment, they will be required to provide a written narrative for the Program Director based upon their experience, training, and knowledge in the areas of curriculum and assessment.
