Program Overview
This two-day screen printing workshop for beginners teaches participants the process of creating and printing their own designs onto paper. Led by contemporary artist Carla Smith, the workshop covers design creation, screen exposure, and printing techniques. Participants will produce their own playful prints up to A3 in size, gaining an understanding of the entire screen printing process.
Program Outline
Outline:
This two-day workshop invites participants to play with print whilst being guided through the process of screen printing. Participants can expect to learn how to create and print their own designs in order to produce their own physical prints onto paper. The workshop will begin with a detailed overview that describes the process of screen-printing. Participants will then be invited to create their own individual design, which will involve exploring screen print examples, sharing ideas and concepts, and playing with the creation of their own design. The development of the design will focus on drawing, but there is also the opportunity to incorporate digital elements into the drawings using premade digital separations provided by the artist. Participants will then learn how to transfer their design onto 'separations' as part of forming their own two-colour print, and how to expose their own screen prior to printing. Throughout the course of the weekend, participants will develop an understanding of each step involved within the screen printing process, whilst producing their own playful print up to A3 in size.
Assessment:
This course is not formally assessed.
Teaching:
The course will be delivered on campus over Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 - 16:00 each day. She graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 2022 and is currently a graduate artist in residence at Peacock & The Worm in Aberdeen. Her current focus of making is centred around food, using this as a tool to explore how we navigate relationships and care for others. Smith’s creative practice involves a range of disciplines including printmaking, sculpture, film making and cooking.
