Program Overview


The Energy Data Management with Business Analytics program equips students with the skills to manage and analyze data across the bulk power generation sector, including wind, oil and gas, and nuclear. Through online learning and industry partnerships, graduates gain expertise in data stewardship, analysis, and management, preparing them for careers in energy operators, regulators, and service companies. The program also provides access to additional learning resources and support services to enhance student success.

Degree Overview:

Energy Data Management with Business Analytics is the first course in the world to bring together asset data management across multiple arms of the bulk power generation sector; specifically, wind, oil and gas and nuclear. The inclusion of Business Analytics further enhances the employability of data managers across the sector.


Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the lifecycle of various types of technical data that describe the physical assets of bulk power generation in nuclear and wind power and in oil and gas.
  • Explore what is necessary to protect and provide this data for use along the asset’s own lifecycle.
  • Gain perspectives as data service providers and data analysts.

Typically students are assessed each year:

  • 4 portfolios

Teaching:

  • This course is an online course taught through CampusMoodle, the university’s Virtual Learning Environment and utilising Microsoft Teams for real-time communication.
  • The course content has been developed and reviewed in partnership with industry and some guest lecturers may be invited to give virtual webinars.
  • The course is taught by the academic staff within Information Management and Business Analytics who have significant teaching, research and professional experience, including experience in the energy industry.
  • Our staff are Fellows of Advance HE or equivalent organisations.
  • This is a professional recognition of lecturer practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning.

Careers:

  • There is a growing recognition of the need for more effective data management in the energy sector.
  • Graduates work in operators, regulators and service companies around the world.
  • On completion, you will be able to undertake a diverse range of roles in energy operators, national data repositories, regulators and in the supply chain for equipment, data and services including:

  • Information Management Advisor
  • Business Analyst
  • The course facilitates access to any of our Information Management MSc courses.

Other:

  • The course is designed as an access route for those who do not currently have the necessary qualifications in this area but do have 1 year or more, relevant work experience in the energy sector or allied industries.
  • In addition to utilising the RGU Online library and the open internet, students are encouraged to take up student membership of membership bodies to access additional learning resources, such as events, conferences and member-only publications.
  • Examples of such bodies include the Society for Professional Data Managers and the PPDM Association.
  • We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.
  • The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences.
  • Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
