Students begin with a foundation year that equips them with the necessary academic skills and knowledge to progress confidently to the BEng (Hons) level. The BEng (Hons) curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including:
- Year 2: Construction methods and technology, structural analysis, concrete technology and design of reinforced concrete structures, geotechnical engineering 1, hydraulics, computational mechanics.
- Placement Year (Optional): Students gain valuable industry experience by working on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced professionals.
- Year 3: Individual project, design of steel structures, integrated approach to design of structures.
Additional Features:
- Fieldwork and Site Visits: Students participate in field investigations, laboratory sessions, and site visits to enhance their practical understanding and observation skills.
- Group Projects: Students engage in collaborative project work that promotes teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Outline
- Year 1: Focuses on fundamental engineering principles, introducing core areas of civil engineering.
- Year 2: Builds on Year 1 with more specialized topics and introduces the Engineering for People Design Challenge, a group project focusing on finding solutions for developing countries. Here's an example of some modules offered:
- Land and Construction Surveying: Covers the use of various surveying instruments and methods to gather and analyze data for construction.
- Structural and Stress Analysis: Introduces the fundamentals of structural mechanics, analyzing the behavior of structures under load.
- Construction Materials: Examines different construction materials and their properties, focusing on their application in various scenarios.
- Geotechnical Engineering 1: Explores the properties and behavior of soil mechanics, focusing on their role in civil engineering projects.
- Civil Engineering Practice: Introduces students to important ethical, environmental, and sustainability issues relevant to civil engineering.
- Hydraulics: Focuses on the principles of fluid flow and their application in various hydraulic engineering projects.
- Individual Project: Students undertake an independent research-based project on a topic of their choice, applying their knowledge, research abilities, and problem-solving skills.
Assessment
- Assessment Methods:
- Coursework: This includes assignments, design projects, laboratory reports, presentations, and other similar submissions.
- Examinations: Students write formal examinations at the end of each module to test their comprehension of the covered content.
- Individual Project: The final year project is assessed based on the quality of research, technical expertise demonstrated in the design and analysis, presentation skills, and overall contribution to the engineering field.
- Assessment Criteria: Assessments focus on evaluating students' understanding of relevant concepts, their problem-solving skills, ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, critical thinking, communication abilities, and overall performance in their chosen assessments.
