Shenandoah University's Conservatory offers minors in Music, Theatre, Dance, and Music Composition. These minors provide students with a foundation in their chosen art form, preparing them for careers in performance, education, or other related fields. Careers:

  • Music Minor: Prepares students for careers in music education, music therapy, performance, or music industry.
  • Theatre Minor: Prepares students for careers in acting, directing, design, technical theatre, or arts administration.
  • Dance Minor: Prepares students for careers in professional dance performance, choreography, dance education, or dance therapy.
  • Music Composition Minor: Enhances creative music-making skills and prepares students for careers in composition, music production, or other music-related fields.

Other:

  • All minors require approval by the Division/Department Chair.
  • Some minors require an audition.
  • Students work with their Academic Advisor to declare a minor.
  • Shenandoah Conservatory offers over 300 performances each year, providing students with performance opportunities.
  • The Conservatory is home to over 20 ensembles, including instrumental, vocal, and dance groups.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: All applicants must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum GPA: Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Prerequisite Courses: Applicants must have completed the following high school courses:
  • Four units of English
  • Four units of mathematics (including algebra and geometry)
  • Three units of science (including biology and chemistry)
  • Three units of social studies
  • Two units of a foreign language
  • Standardized Test Scores: Applicants must submit scores from either the SAT or ACT.
  • There is no minimum score requirement, but competitive applicants typically score at least 500 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT.
  • Audition or Portfolio: All applicants must submit an audition or portfolio of their work.
  • The specific requirements for the audition or portfolio vary depending on the major that the applicant is applying to.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • English Proficiency: All applicants must demonstrate English proficiency.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum TOEFL score requirement is 80, and the minimum IELTS score requirement is 6.5.
  • Foreign Language Proficiency: Applicants who are applying to the Music or Theatre majors must also demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language.
  • The specific foreign language requirements vary depending on the major that the applicant is applying to.

Additional Requirements for International Students:

  • International students must also submit the following documents:
  • A certified copy of their passport
  • A financial affidavit
  • A visa (if required)
  • International students who are not native English speakers must also meet the English proficiency requirements listed above.
