MA Medical Humanities: Bodies, Cultures and Ideas

is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time program offered at Birkbeck, University of London. This interdisciplinary program explores the relationship between medicine and humanities, focusing on health through the lens of culture and history.

Program Description:

The program consists of a core module (30 credits), three option modules (30 credits each), and a dissertation (60 credits) or two additional option modules.

Assessment:

Assessments will involve a combination of close-reading commentaries, essays, research scrapbooks, and a 15,000-word dissertation (or two additional option modules).

Entry Requirements:

  • Applications are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively.

  • Students living in the UK on a student visa will not be eligible to enrol as part-time students (except for some modules).
  • Credits and Accredited Prior Learning (APL):
  • Individuals who have studied at university may be able to transfer previously earned credits to Birkbeck or another institution.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • The usual requirement for non-native English speakers or those who haven't previously studied in English is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each sub-test.
  • If you do not meet the minimum IELTS requirement, the university offers pre-sessional English courses and foundation programmes to help you improve your language skills and gain admission to Birkbeck.
