Entry Requirements
Art History and Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish) BA (Hons):
UK/EU Applicants
- 96-128 UCAS tariff points (e.g. A-levels CCC-ABB)
- GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C) or above
International Applicants
- Completion of a relevant qualification equivalent to a UK A-level or equivalent, with a minimum grade of C
- Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in each sub-test
Alternative Entry Routes
- Access to Higher Education Diploma
- Credit earned on the Certificate of Higher Education in Culture and Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish) or History of Art may be counted towards the degree.
Foundation Year Degree
- 48 UCAS tariff points
- Completion of the Foundation Year with a minimum overall average of 50%
- GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C) or above
Mature Applicants
- Birkbeck welcomes applications from students aged 21 or over who may not meet the traditional entry requirements.
- Applications will be assessed on an individual basis, taking into account qualifications, work experience, and personal statements.
Language Proficiency Requirements

- CPE (Cambridge English Proficiency): Minimum score of 180 overall, with no less than 176 in each sub-test.
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 90 overall, with no less than 20 in each sub-test.
- Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 115.
- French: Applicants must demonstrate A-level or equivalent qualifications in French, or a minimum DELF B2 level.
- German: Applicants must demonstrate A-level or equivalent qualifications in German, or a minimum Goethe Institut B2 level.
- Italian: Applicants must demonstrate A-level or equivalent qualifications in Italian, or a minimum CELI B2 level.
- Japanese: Applicants must demonstrate A-level or equivalent qualifications in Japanese, or a minimum JLPT N2 level.
