Program Overview
The Complex Systems program explores the intricacies of complex systems, utilizing micro-worlds and systemic models to foster understanding. Through a blended learning approach, participants engage with AI, learning systems, and complex feedback, preparing them for careers in systems analysis, management, and AI. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and the application of complex systems principles to real-world challenges.
Program Outline
Outline:
This module focuses on engaging with complex systems, developing systemic models, and using micro-worlds to explore them. It covers aspects of autonomy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in conjunction with human activity and agency, addressing learning systems in terms of complex feedback.
Topics covered include:
- Overview of academic and business studies of complex systems, including complex adaptive systems.
- Implications for modelling complexity, including a group activity to specify a model (e.g., microworld) for exploring a complex system (e.g., transport or health system).
Teaching:
The course utilizes a blended learning approach, combining online lectures and interactive exercises with in-person group work and discussions. Participants will have access to a dedicated online platform for resources and communication.
Faculty:
The program is led by experienced instructors with expertise in complex systems, AI, and systems thinking.
Unique Approaches:
- Emphasis on hands-on learning through micro-world simulations and group projects.
- Integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
- Opportunity to apply complex systems principles to real-world challenges.
Careers:
Graduates of this program will be well-prepared for careers in various fields, including:
- Systems analysis and engineering
- Management and decision-making
- Policy development
- Research and development
- Artificial Intelligence and machine learning
- Sustainability and environmental management
Other:
- All applicants must have completed the Fundamentals of Systems Thinking module before undertaking this course.
- This course can be taken as a Short Course for Credit, with 10 credit points contributing towards the Systems Thinking Practice MSc.
