Archaeology with Spanish

is a Single Honours degree program available at Queen's University Belfast. This program combines the study of archaeology with the acquisition of linguistic proficiency in Spanish. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human history and culture, while also equipping them with the skills necessary to work in professional archaeological contexts.

Program Description:

The Archaeology with Spanish program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year. In Stage 1, students will be introduced to the basic principles of archaeology and the main methods of archaeological investigation. They will also begin to develop their language skills in Spanish. In Stage 2, students will explore more advanced topics in archaeology, such as the archaeology of specific regions and periods. They will also continue to develop their language skills in Spanish. In Stage 3, students will undertake a major research project on a topic of their choice. This project will allow them to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the program. Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to learn from experienced archaeologists and language teachers. They will also have access to a wide range of resources, including a dedicated archaeology laboratory and a language learning center.

Program Structure:

The Archaeology with Spanish program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year.

The program consists of a total of 120 credits, which are divided into 40 credits per stage. Individual Modules:

Stage 1:

Introduction to Archaeology: This module will introduce students to the basic principles of archaeology and the main methods of archaeological investigation.
Spanish 1: This module will cover the basics of Spanish grammar and vocabulary.
Archaeological Excavation: This module will provide students with hands-on experience in archaeological fieldwork.

Stage 2:

Themes in Historical Archaeology: This module will explore the archaeology of specific historical periods, such as the Roman Empire or the Middle Ages.
Spanish 2: This module will build on the skills acquired in Spanish 1 and will focus on developing students' fluency and accuracy in speaking and writing Spanish.

Stage 3:

Spanish 3: This module will further develop students' language skills and prepare them for the year abroad.

Additional course costs:

The cost of travel and entrance fees for one-day or half-day field trips across all academic years is included in the course fee, but students are expected to pay for subsistence costs.
Participation in a four-week field excavation module at Stage 1 is a requirement of the programme.
At Stage 2 students may choose optional modules that have associated field trip costs ranging from £50 to £500.
At Stage 3 students are required to spend a year abroad studying Archaeology in their chosen language.
Students who undertake a period of study abroad are responsible for travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.
A limited amount of funding may be available to contribute towards these additional costs, if the placement takes place through a government student mobility scheme.
