The Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) - Health Visiting (Degree Apprenticeship) program at the University of Salford is a 13-month blended learning program designed to equip registered nurses with advanced skills and knowledge in specialist community practice. Degree Overview: The Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) - Health Visiting (Degree Apprenticeship) program at the University of Salford is a blended learning program that runs for 13 months. It is scheduled to commence in September 2024 subject to NMC Approval. The program aims to equip registered nurses with advanced skills and knowledge in specialist community practice.


Objectives:

This program aims to:

  • Prepare graduates to become leaders in their area of specialization with skills and knowledge in quality improvement, caseload management, team leadership, and working in a complex health and social care system.
  • Provide graduates with specialist and advanced level leadership knowledge and skills.
  • Offer graduates the option to complete the V300 program and register with the NMC as a Non-Medical prescriber.
  • Tailor learning through the selection of optional modules.
  • Provide a supportive interdisciplinary environment with other community nurses.

Program Content:

The program focuses on delivering specialist skills, knowledge, and behaviors in the implementation of whole-person, place-based, and integrated care, enabling graduates to support children, families, and young people in community settings.


Structure:

The program is a blended learning program, with half the time spent working in a Health Visiting team and half the time spent in university theory. It includes alternative practice and spoke days across wider community services to enrich learning.

  • Non-medical Prescribing - Independent Prescribing Practice: This module focuses on the practical elements of independent prescribing, with a theoretical component covered in the "Non-medical Prescribing - Independent Prescribing Theory" module.
  • Non-medical Prescribing Theory - Independent Prescribing Theory: This module focuses on evaluating and challenging prescribing practice, considering evidence-based practice, equality, diversity, and clinical governance.

Semester 3:

  • Compassionate Digital Care: This module examines the ethical, legal, and policy concerns around digital health and its application within the student's specialist area.
  • Education in Practice: This module prepares community practitioners to promote, deliver, design, and assess education in practice settings across pre and post-registration health and care programmes.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health: This module focuses on developing knowledge and competence in contraceptive and sexual health within a community setting.
  • Specialist Safeguarding: This module provides advanced knowledge of safeguarding issues across the life course.

Careers: Upon successful completion of the program, graduates have the opportunity to apply for roles as Specialist Community Public Health Nurses - Health Visitors. They may also pursue development opportunities in safeguarding, education/teaching, management, or research.

  • People with SCPHN qualifications often stay within those roles or can take development opportunities into safeguarding, education/teaching, management, or research.

Admission Requirements: The program has the following admission requirements:

  • Employed for more than 30 hours a week
  • English and Maths GCSE Grade C or above or recognised equivalent
  • Employed in an appropriate nursing position with an approved apprenticeship partner
  • Right to work in England and meet the Residency Eligibility criteria
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and health checks completed before the program commencement
  • The company can then contact the University of Salford to express their interest. Enrolment dates for the program are September 2024 and September 2025.
