Entry Requirements:


EU Home Students:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sociology or a related social science field with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors or other academic professionals who can speak to the applicant's academic abilities and potential.
  • A statement of purpose outlining the applicant's research interests, career goals, and reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD in Sociology at the University at Albany.
  • Official GRE scores.
  • GRE scores more than 5 years old will not be accepted.
  • A writing sample, such as a research paper or thesis chapter.
  • International students must also submit:
  • TOEFL or IELTS score
  • demonstrating English language proficiency. The minimum score requirement is 100 for the TOEFL and 7.0 for the IELTS.
  • Financial documentation demonstrating the ability to fund their studies in the United States.
