Program Overview

This online Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Humanities explores the human experience of health and illness through the lenses of the humanities and social sciences. The course covers key health challenges, debates about the social, political, and economic environments of health, illness, and medicine, and advanced skills in interpreting and using data. Students will learn about concepts like critical medical humanities, health research methodologies, illness narratives, medical law, and neurodiversity. The program prepares graduates for careers in various sectors, including government agencies, sustainability management, policy research, and NGOs.

• This online Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Humanities explores the human experience of health and illness through the lenses of the humanities and social sciences.
• The course is 9 months full-time or 18 months part-time and is suitable for students with backgrounds in humanities, social sciences, health, and social care.
• The curriculum covers key health challenges, debates about the social, political, and economic environments of health, illness, and medicine, and advanced skills in interpreting and using data.
• Students will learn about concepts like critical medical humanities, health research methodologies, illness narratives, medical law, and neurodiversity.

Assessment:

• Assessment formats include essays, annotated bibliography entries, critical commentaries, project proposals, and Student Devised Assessments (SDAs).

• Assessment tasks will challenge students to deliver study findings using creative and context-appropriate methods.

• The research methods module includes a presentation followed by written peer reviews evaluating student and other project proposals.

Teaching:

• Teaching is delivered entirely online through lectures, workshops, scaffolded learning assignments, and online study groups with subject experts and peers.

• Students will also have in-person meetings with their tutor.

• The program utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including presentations, discussions, and collaborative learning activities.

Careers:

• The program prepares graduates for careers in various sectors, including national, international, and local government agencies, sustainability management, policy research, corporate responsibility, environmental journalism, environmental tourism, NGOs, charities, conservation work, and business graduate programs in sustainability.

• Graduates of the program are known for their strong communication skills, flexibility, analytical and synthetic competence, and ability to think critically and creatively.

Other:

• The program is part of the Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers (PGECR) network in Medical Humanities, which organizes seminars, conferences, and social events.

• Students can apply to the MA program to conduct research and write a dissertation.
