The New Zealand Certificate in Learning Design (Level 6) equips educators and trainers with the skills to analyze learning needs, design technology-enhanced learning solutions, and evaluate their impact. Delivered online, the program includes 360 credits of coursework and 60 hours of work-based learning, preparing graduates for roles in instructional design, curriculum development, and other learning-related fields.

This qualification is intended for educators and trainers in the adult and tertiary education sector who want to develop the skills and knowledge to analyse learning design requirements and design and evaluate solutions for improving curriculum, teaching practice and learner outcomes through a focus on technology enhanced learning and teaching. You will learn to:
- Analyse the learning design requirements of dynamic situations for application in an adult or tertiary education or training context.
- Design pedagogically and culturally appropriate, and technology-enhanced learning solutions to meet a specified brief.
- Evaluate factors that impact on learning design implementation and outcomes.
- Collaborate with others to enhance the use of learning design in their practice. Please note that this programme requires students to complete 60 hours of work-based learning. you will require access to a training or education environment where you have the opportunity to design, implement and evaluate changes to the learning or assessment of adults.
Course Structure
- This programme requires students to complete 360 credits, consisting of 3 x 100-credit papers and 60 hours of work-based learning.
- Paper 1: Foundations of Learning Design (100 credits) - Provides students with knowledge of learning theory and learning design methodologies and how these are applied in a New Zealand adult and tertiary education context.
- Paper 2: Design for Learning (100 credits) - Exposes learners to a range of learning design technologies and practices, including accessibility tools and considerations. Students will engage in practical learning design tasks which can be applied in their context. A core element of this paper is the embedding of Māori pedagogies and design for adult learners in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
- Paper 3: Evaluation and Mentorship in Learning Design Practice (100 credits) - Empowers students to become learning leaders in their context, through the collaboration with colleagues to embed learning design into their teaching practice. Students will understand the role that evaluation and feedback play in the learning design process and for their ongoing professional learning.

Teaching:
- All courses in this programme are offered online through SIT's virtual learning environment (Blackboard). No on-campus attendance is required.
- Students have access to a dedicated learning facilitator for each paper who provides individual support and guidance throughout the programme.
- The programme uses a variety of online technologies and tools to support student learning, including discussion forums, video conferencing, and online resources.

Entry Requirements:
Domestic Students:
- School Leavers:
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- NCEA Level 2 and/or relevant Level 5 qualification, or equivalent skills and knowledge.
- Keen interest in learning design.
- Mature Applicants:
- 20 years of age or over at time of program entry.
- Demonstrate interest and aptitude for learning design with potential for success.
- Examples may include completion of a Level 5 or above program in a related discipline, or employment in a related field for 2+ years.
- Admission subject to program regulations by Head of Faculty.
- Personal commitment and belief in self-ability to succeed are important, considered during selection.
International Students:
- Meet Domestic Students requirements (above).
- English Language Requirements:
- IELTS: Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5.
- TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with essay score of 5 TWE).
- TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 60 (with writing score of 18).
- Cambridge English Exam: B2 First or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with score of 169 (at least 162 in each skill).
- OET: Minimum Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests.
- NZCEL: Expiring Level 4 (Academic) with score of 50, or Current Level 4 (Academic) with score of 55.
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42.
- Language Cert: C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill.
- Applicants should have computer and internet access.
