Program Overview
The PhD by Public Works at Middlesex University is a research degree for individuals with a significant body of prior work. Candidates submit their works and a context statement explaining their contribution to knowledge. The program is assessed through a two-stage process, including a draft review and final examination. It is offered part-time in any discipline, subject to supervision availability.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This program is a research degree awarded to candidates who have produced a body of work prior to registration that is equivalent in originality, coherence, and significance to a Ph.D. It involves submitting works that are the outcome of a research process and are accessible in the public domain. Additionally, candidates must submit a context statement (critical commentary) of up to 30,000 words, which contextualizes the works and explains their contribution to knowledge. The program is designed for individuals who have already established a significant body of work in their field and are seeking to formally recognize their achievements.
Outline:
The program consists of two main components:
- The Works: This includes the body of work that the candidate has produced prior to registration. Examples of such works may include peer-reviewed publications, books, artworks, performances, or other scholarly reports.
- The Context Statement: This is a critical commentary of up to 30,000 words that provides a reflective and analytical discussion of the works presented. It explains why such works embed creation, interpretation, or exposition of knowledge that can be or have been considered at the forefront of their field. The program does not have a formal curriculum, but candidates are expected to engage in independent research and study.
Assessment:
The program is assessed through a two-stage process:
- Stage 1 Review Panel: Six months into the program, candidates submit a draft of their context statement (6,000 words) for review. The panel assesses the work's progress and determines whether it demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities to complete the context statement to the required doctoral level.
- Final Examination: Candidates submit their completed context statement and works for final examination. The examination is conducted by a panel of experts who assess the works and context statement based on the QAA level 8 Doctoral criteria for their contribution to knowledge, originality, methodology, and significance.
Teaching:
The program does not have a traditional teaching format. Instead, candidates are expected to engage in independent research and study. However, they are supported by a supervisor who provides guidance and feedback on their work.
Careers:
The program is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in academia, research, or other professional fields related to their area of expertise.
Other:
- The program is offered part-time, with an expected submission time of 18 months and a maximum candidature period of 24 months.
- The program is available in any discipline, subject to the availability of supervision arrangements.
- The program is open to candidates from all backgrounds and nationalities. Some details may vary depending on the specific field of study chosen by the candidate.
