This four-year program prepares students for teaching careers in Human Sciences and Hospitality Management at the 8th grade and high school levels. Graduates will be eligible for a Specialized Certificate in Hospitality, Nutrition, and Food Science (Grades 8-12).

The program consists of a prescribed curriculum spread across four years, with each year divided into Fall and Spring semesters. The curriculum covers various aspects related to Human Sciences and Hospitality Management, with a focus on preparing students for teaching careers in these fields.


Year 1:

  • Fall: Introduction to Human Sciences, Essentials of College Rhetoric, American Government, Mathematics, Creative Arts, Introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Spring: Advanced College Rhetoric, Texas Politics and Topics, Mathematics, Social and Behavioral Science, Foundations of Human Sciences, Individual Study (Maker Space I).

Year 2:

  • Fall: History of the United States to 1877, Language Philosophy and Culture, Science of Nutrition, Introduction to Hospitality and Retail Management, Adulting 101: Real Skills for Real Life.
  • Spring: History of the United States since 1877, Communication, Civility, and Ethics, Hotel Operations, Nutrition, Foods, and Healthy Living, Introduction to Event and Venue Management, Individual Study (Maker Space II).

Year 3:

  • Fall: Life and Physical Science, Foundations of Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Food Sanitation, Introduction to Food Production and Sustainable Practices, RHIM Concentration (3 credit hours for distance students only).
  • Spring: Professional Applications in Family and Consumer Sciences, Understanding Child and Adolescent Behavior or Comprehensive Wellness for Adolescents, Food Truck Operations, Individual Study (Principles of Food Prep), Adolescents, Multiliteracies, and Content Area Learning.

Year 4:

  • Fall: Instructional Management in Family and Consumer Sciences, Career Preparation in Family and Consumer Sciences, Research and Evaluation in Family and Consumer Sciences, Restaurant Operations and Management or Food and Beverage Operations Management, Capstone in Human Sciences.
  • Graduates will be eligible for a Specialized Certificate in Hospitality, Nutrition, and Food Science (Grades 8-12).
  • The program requires students to complete approximately 60 hours with an overall 2.75 GPA or better and a satisfactory level of performance on an approved basic skills assessment.
  • Other requirements for the teaching program include a 2.75 GPA or better in professional education courses in the teaching field and a grade of C or better in all required concentration and support courses.
