Program Overview
This 9-month program prepares students for affiliated MSc programs in Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Computational Mathematics, or Mathematics. Students study a combination of Level 7, 8, and 9 courses based on their chosen MSc pathway, with a minimum overall average of 65% required to progress. The program is designed for applicants who lack the necessary mathematics or statistics background for direct entry into the MSc programs.
Program Outline
Outline:
Year 1
Students will study a minimum of 6 courses and achieve an overall average of at least 65% in the examinations to progress to one of the affiliated MSc programmes the following year. They will typically study a combination of Level 7, Level 8, and Level 9 non-graduating courses based on their chosen MSc program pathway.
For entry to MSc in Actuarial Science:
Semester 1
- Mandatory: Introduction to Statistical Science A (Level 7), Probability and Statistics A (Level 8)
- Optional (at least one): Calculus A (Level 7), Multivariable Calculus and Real Analysis A (Level 8), Linear Algebra (Level 8), Applied Mathematics A (Level 8)
Semester 2
- Mandatory: Introduction to Statistical Science B (Level 7), Probability and Statistics B (Level 8)
- Optional (at least one): Calculus B (Level 7), Multivariable Calculus and Real Analysis B (Level 8), Numerical Analysis A (Level 8), Pure Mathematics A (Level 8)
For entry to MSc in Applied Mathematical Sciences (all streams), MSc in Computational Mathematics or MSc in Mathematics:
Semester 1
- Mandatory: Linear Algebra (Level 8)
- Optional (at least one): Multivariable Calculus and Real Analysis A (Level 8), Applied Mathematics A (Level 8), Probability and Statistics A (Level 8), Vector Analysis (Level 9)
Semester 2
- Mandatory: Numerical Analysis A (Level 8), Ordinary Differential Equations (Level 9)
Other:
- The program is designed for applicants who want to study one of the affiliated MSc programs but who do not have the required mathematics or statistics background.
- Completion of the program allows students to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to take up one of the following MSc programs:
- Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics Department: MSc in Actuarial Science, MSc in Financial Mathematics, MSc in Quantitative Financial Risk Management, MSc in Quantitative Financial Engineering.
- Mathematics Department: MSc in Applied Mathematical Sciences (all streams), MSc in Computational Mathematics, MSc in Mathematics, MSc in Quantitative Finance and Mathematics.
- Students follow a non-graduating program of study and can complete the program to receive a PG Certificate or PG Diploma if they have qualifications in mathematics equivalent to level 8 or beyond.
- Specific courses taken by students depend on their prior mathematics level and the chosen MSc program.
- Students from Scotland, the UK, or the EU can receive a combined offer for the Graduate Certificate followed by the chosen MSc. This option requires an overall average of at least 65% in all examinations. However, Tier 4 visa holders cannot use this combined offer option.
- Tier 4 applicants can use the Graduate Certificate as a pathway to apply for one of the MSc programs.
