Program Overview

This two-semester Ontario College Certificate program prepares students for admission to diploma and degree-level Health Sciences programs. It provides a solid foundation in core courses such as communications, biology, chemistry, and mathematics, along with optional physics or social sciences. The program aims to develop transferable post-secondary credits and equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in their next academic program.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

Program Objectives:

  • Provide students with the required knowledge and skills to meet admission requirements for a range of diploma and degree-level programs.
  • Develop transferable post-secondary credits where relevant.
  • Equip students with knowledge and skills in communications, mathematics and sciences for success in their next academic program.
  • Offer a foundational understanding of anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and optional physics or social sciences.

Program Description:

This program offers students a solid foundation in various core courses, preparing them for further academic pursuits in health sciences.

Highlights:

  • Students study required courses like communications, biology, chemistry, and mathematics, alongside optional physics or a social science course.
  • Communication courses enhance academic writing and critical thinking skills essential for success in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
  • Hands-on experience in microscopy and basic laboratory skills are provided.
  • The Nursing Simulation Lab enhances the learning experience for anatomy and physiology.

Requirements for Admission to Bachelor of Science in Nursing:

  • Students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, or 75% average, in this program to be eligible for consideration.
  • Note: The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is in high demand, and admission is not guaranteed with the completion of this program as there may be ranking and residency limitations.

Outline:

Semester 1:

  • CHEM 103: Fundamentals of Chemistry 1: Covers atomic structure, chemical bonding, nomenclature, chemical reactions, quantities in chemical reactions, data collection, and analysis, and laboratory techniques.
  • MATH 104: Math for Pre-Health Sciences: Focuses on numeracy, percentages, proportions, conversions, and dosages with a health care focus.
  • Explores fundamental algebra, linear functions and systems, 2D and 3D geometry, and exponential and logarithmic functions.
  • COMM 110: Communications for College: Develops communication skills through reading, writing, listening, speaking, research, and critical thinking.
  • BIOL 110: Cellular and Molecular Biology: Provides a foundation in fundamental biological concepts, with emphasis on cellular structure, function, metabolism, interaction with the environment, growth, disorders, cellular reproduction, inheritance, and the basis of microbes and infectious diseases.
  • Explores these concepts from a systemic perspective focusing on the human body.
  • Option 1:
  • HLTH 1001: Emerging Trends and Careers in Health Sciences:
  • Explores trends, current and emerging technologies, careers, and societal impacts in the healthcare field in a seminar format.
  • Option 2:
  • CHEM 104: Fundamentals of Chemistry 2: Builds upon concepts learned in CHEM 103, focusing on energy changes and rates of reactions, chemical systems and equilibrium, acids and bases, stoichiometric calculations, oxidation-reduction reactions, and applications in healthcare and environmental issues.
  • Data collection, analysis, laboratory techniques, and report writing are covered in the lab component.
  • Prerequisite: CHEM 103
  • BIOL 111: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology: Explores human body systems with an introduction to common pathologies using examples from current scientific research.
  • Prerequisite: BIOL 110
  • MATH 1000: Statistics and Probability for Health Science: Introduces statistical terminology and diverse methods for describing, analyzing, and interpreting health sciences data.
  • Covers empirical and theoretical probability and inferential statistics.

Other:

  • Students who achieve a GPA of 3.00 or better for at least one semester will receive an additional 10% in their admission assessment for any post-secondary diploma program at St. Lawrence College.
