Overview:

This program provides the in-school portion of the 5-year apprenticeship program for students already registered and working in the trade of Brick and Stone Masonry. Apprentices are required to complete three levels of in-school training along with the required on-the-job or practical components of the trade. Upon successful completion, apprentices are eligible to write the Certificate of Qualifications Red Seal exam for Brick and Stone Masonry.


Program Objectives:

  • Equip students with the theoretical knowledge necessary to master the performance objectives of the Training Standards for the Brick and Stone Masonry trade.
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge required for successful completion of the on-the-job practical components of the apprenticeship.
  • Prepare apprentices for successful completion of the Certificate of Qualifications Red Seal exam.

Outline:

The program consists of three levels of in-school training, each level covering specific areas of the trade.


Level 1 Apprenticeship (Basic):

  • MASN 110: Tools and Equipment 1: Introduces students to the use and maintenance of various hand tools and equipment, power tools, and measuring and layout tools.
  • MASN 111: Materials and Safety Equipment 1: Provides students with information on the safe use of scaffolds, personal protection devices, and the Ontario Construction Safety Association's safety in rigging program.
  • Students also study the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario and the requirements of the workplace.
  • MASN 112: Engineering, Building, and Safety Code 1: Teaches students how to interpret architectural drawings, specifications, schedules, contract documents, building codes, CSA masonry standards, and safety codes.

Level 2 Apprenticeship (Intermediate):

  • MASN 201: Engineering, Building, and Safety Code 2: Builds on the knowledge gained in Level 1, focusing on the application of building codes, CSA masonry standards, and safety codes in practical situations.
  • MASN 202: Grout: Teaches students the properties of grout, its selection process, and its application in masonry construction.
  • MASN 203: Job Layout 2: Expands on the layout skills learned in Level 1, covering advanced topics like locating reference lines, interpreting blueprints, and selecting and preparing masonry units.

Level 3 Apprenticeship (Advanced):

  • MASN 301: Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment: Reinforces the proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment, focusing on safety and efficiency.
  • MASN 302: Use Material Handling and Safety Equipment: Provides in-depth training on the safe use and inspection of material handling and safety equipment, including various regulations and manufacturer instructions.
  • MASN 303: Engineering, Building, and Safety Code 3: Furthers the understanding of building codes, safety codes, and relevant standards, focusing on complex applications and problem-solving in advanced masonry projects.
