Program Overview


The Hairstyling - Apprenticeship Program at St. Lawrence College is a two-year program that combines in-school training with on-the-job experience. It equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel as hairstylists, including haircutting, styling, coloring, and chemical treatments. Graduates are prepared for a variety of career paths in the hairstyling industry, including hairstylist, salon owner, and educator. The program is funded in part by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and requires sponsorship from an employer.

This program is designed for individuals currently employed in a salon who are working towards obtaining the provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Hairstylist. It combines in-school training with on-the-job experience to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the industry.


Level 1 (1006)

  • HAIR 1100-B: Ethics, Regulation and Policy: This course equips students with the knowledge of professional ethics, government regulations, and workplace standards relevant to the hairstyling industry.
  • HAIR 1102-B: Entrepreneurial Skills 1: Students learn the essential entrepreneurial skills needed to operate and manage a hairstyling business, including financial management, marketing, and customer service.
  • HAIR 1103-B: Professional Development: This course helps students adapt to evolving technologies and develop strategies for ongoing professional growth.
  • HAIR 1104-B: Client Service: Students develop effective client service strategies to meet individual needs and expectations.
  • HAIR 1106-B: Cut Hair 1: Students learn various haircutting techniques using different tools, adapting to individual needs and expectations.
  • HAIR 1107-B: Style Hair 1: This course covers standard and specialized techniques for styling wet and dry hair effectively.
  • HAIR 1108-B: Permanent Wave Hair: Students learn how to perform permanent waves using current methods and adapt them to different hair types and styles.
  • HAIR 1109-B: Colour and Lighten Hair 1: This course covers various hair colouring techniques, including lightening, toning, highlighting, and lowlighting.

Level 2 (1007)

  • HAIR 2102-B: Entrepreneurial Skills 2: Students further develop their entrepreneurial skills, focusing on advanced business management and financial strategies.
  • HAIR 2106-B: Cut Hair 2: Students refine their haircutting skills and learn advanced techniques.
  • HAIR 2107-B: Style Hair 2: This course delves further into advanced styling techniques and hairstyling trends.
  • HAIR 2109-B: Colour and Lighten Hair 2: This course covers advanced coloring techniques for achieving specific color effects.
  • HAIR 2110-B: Hair Additions: Students learn about working with various hair additions, including comparing different types, application methods, special tools, and maintenance procedures.
