Overview:

This program aims to prepare individuals for a career as a Journeyperson Industrial Electrician. It uses a blended approach of in-class instruction and on-the-job training, allowing apprentices to earn a wage while learning. Upon successful completion of the program and required work experience, individuals can write the Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) exam to become certified journeypersons.


Objectives:

  • Equip apprentices with the knowledge and skills required to function as skilled journeypersons in the industrial electrical trade.
  • Ensure apprentices meet the training objectives outlined in the Apprenticeship Training Standards.
  • Prepare apprentices for the C of Q exam and successful careers as industrial electricians.

Program Description:

This program consists of three levels:

  • Level 1 (Basic): Focuses on fundamental electrical concepts, Canadian Electrical Code basics, blueprint reading, and installation methods.
  • Level 2 (Intermediate): Delves deeper into electrical theory, advanced installation methods, instrumentation, and electronic principles.
  • Level 3 (Advanced): Covers specialized topics like fluid power, advanced electrical theory and installations, instrumentation, and advanced electronics.

Outline:

The program outline for 2023-2024 is as follows:


Level 1 (Basic):

  • ELEC 101 & 102: Introduction to Canadian Electrical Code, including layout, code interpretations, and applications in single-family dwellings.
  • ELEC 103 & 104: Electrical theory fundamentals, including current flow, voltage, resistance, power, and circuits, followed by installation methods for various types of cables and conduits.
  • ELEC 105 & 106: Instrumentation principles and applications, covering pressure and temperature measurement, sensors, and basic logic gates.

Level 2 (Intermediate):

  • INDE 201 & 202: Advanced understanding of Canadian Electrical Code and blueprint interpretation, including complex installations and calculations.
  • INDE 203 & 204: Deep dive into electrical theory and complex circuit analysis, followed by advanced installation techniques for various electrical systems.
  • INDE 205 & 206: Advanced instrumentation concepts, including industrial pressure and temperature sensors, process and instrumentation diagrams, and advanced electronic circuit design and troubleshooting.
  • INDE 303 & 304: Advanced electrical theory, motors, and control systems, followed by complex installation methods for specialized industrial equipment.
