Outline

  • The program is delivered via blended learning (online and face-to-face) with a typical duration of four years for first-year entrants.
  • Attendance is typically one day per week, with specific days depending on the trimester:
  • Trimester A: 12 days' attendance (mid-September to mid-December)
  • Trimester B: 12 days' attendance (mid-January to mid-April)
  • Trimester C: Attendance for the work-based project
  • Year 1 includes Structural Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Work-Based Learning 1, Construction Materials, and Applied Mathematics 1.
  • Year 2 includes Geotechnics, Structural Design and Analysis, Work-Based Learning 2, Design of Structures, Construction Processes Management 1, and Construction Contracts 2.
  • Year 3 includes Composite Materials Performance, Hydraulics, Geotechnical Design, Work-Based Learning 3, Structural Engineering, Public Health, Water and Wastewater Treatment.
  • Year 4 includes Advanced Structural Engineering, Water Resource Management, Waste Management and Contaminated Land, and Dissertation.

Assessment

  • Assessment methods include online resources, tutor discussions, assignments, and feedback provided through the GCU Learn virtual learning environment.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:


All Applicants:

  • Applicants must be employed full-time in a relevant role commensurate to the programme of study.
  • Applicants must have the support of their employer.

New Employees Applying Directly from School:

  • UCAS Tariff: 96 points.
  • Scottish Higher: BBCC or equivalent, including Higher in Maths and a Science or Technology subject.

Foundation Apprenticeships:

  • Selected Foundation Apprenticeships, in combination with SQA Highers, are accepted for entry to the degree programme.

Modern Apprenticeships:

  • A completed Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF level 6 in a relevant discipline is equivalent to two Highers at B grade.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

  • Applicants with prior work experience and professional qualifications may be considered through the university's flexible entry system through RPL.
  • This process allows prospective graduate apprentices to claim credit(s) against previously assessed and certificated learning, including informal learning, to be considered and recognized for academic purposes and credit within their course.
  • Advanced entry may also be granted through RPL.
  • Skills, knowledge, academic qualifications, and experience will all be used to determine the year of the degree you will enter.

Additional Requirements:

  • Candidates must be employed in the same field as the course of study.
  • Candidates must supply a supporting letter from their employer as part of the admissions process.
