Students can choose to focus their studies on either Classics or Ancient Mediterranean Studies.


Classics concentration:

emphasizes the study of Greek and Latin languages and literature, offering courses in advanced Greek and Latin, Classical literature in English translation, and various courses exploring the ancient world.


Ancient Mediterranean Studies concentration:

provides a broader perspective on the ancient Mediterranean region, including its history, archaeology, art, religion, and philosophy. Students can explore topics like the ancient Near East, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and the Early Christian Church.


Both concentrations culminate in a senior thesis where students conduct independent research and write a substantial paper on a topic related to their chosen field.

  • Classics concentration:
  • Minimum of 8 courses, including:
  • At least 2 courses with reading in Greek and/or Latin
  • At least 1 writing course on Classical literature in English translation
  • At least 2 other courses dealing with the ancient world
  • Options for the remaining courses include:
  • Topics in Advanced Greek and Latin
  • Greek and Roman literature in English translation
  • Courses on specific topics like Greek drama, Roman history, or ancient philosophy
  • Foreign study and independent study options
  • Ancient Mediterranean Studies concentration:
