Program Overview


Students complete 12 courses, including language, literature, and culture courses, as well as electives from related fields. Study abroad is recommended, and students must fulfill the university's general education and college degree requirements.

Outline:

  • Course Requirements: Students must complete a minimum of 12 courses, totaling 36 credits, distributed as follows:
  • 8 courses (24 credits) of ARAB or ARIS courses:
  • 2 Language courses
  • 2 Literature courses
  • 2 Culture courses
  • 4 courses (12 credits) at the 2000-level or above from programs other than Arabic and Islamic Studies.
  • These courses may include:
  • Modern or classical languages
  • English, Linguistics, or Philosophy
  • Communication Sciences (related to second language acquisition or the Arab World)
  • History, Political Science, Art History, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, or Geography courses dealing with Islamic culture or the Arab world
  • Study Abroad: Enrollment in a study abroad program in an Arabic-speaking country is recommended but not mandatory.
  • Up to 12 credits from study abroad programs may count toward the major.
  • General Education Requirements: Students must meet the University's General Education requirements in addition to the major requirements.
  • College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements: Students must also meet the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences degree requirements.

Other:

  • Special Topics, Foreign Study and Independent Study courses may fit, depending on the topic, into any of the above groups with advisor approval.
  • Writing in the Major: All students must take ARAB 3550W Classical Arabic Literature to fulfill the Writing in the Major requirement.
  • Minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies: A minor in this area is described in the "Minors" section of the catalog.
