Program Overview


This four-year MDes program combines design theory with practical skills, enabling students to develop innovative physical and digital products. Through project-based learning and industry-standard facilities, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the design process, from concept to creation. The program offers specialization and research opportunities in the fourth year, preparing graduates for careers in design and design thinking.

  • Provides students with the opportunity to develop their commercial awareness, technical skills, and ability to innovate.
  • Enables students to develop physical and digital products that both look good and work well.
  • Follows the same first three years as the BSc Design program, with an added fourth year that raises the qualification to master's level.
  • Emphasizes project-based learning to allow students to observe the outcome of their design from concept to creation of the actual product.
  • Allows students to build a high-quality portfolio with various projects, academic and industry briefs, and case studies.
  • Provides students with extensive workshop training using industry-standard equipment and software.
  • Offers access to dedicated design studios, digital sketching facilities, prototyping workshops, and electronics and digital fabrication labs.
  • Equips students with practical knowledge transferable to the industry, providing a head start for their future careers as designers and design thinkers.

Program Components:

  • First two years focus on creative and technical subjects, including mechanics, electronics, and digital design.
  • Third year introduces students to the human-centered design process and advanced design for sustainability, enabling them to identify alternative design solutions.
  • MDes year allows for further specialization and research-led design.

Delivery Options:

  • Available as a 4-year full-time program or a 5-year full-time program with placement.
  • Starts in September.

  • The placement year helps students understand the professional world and equips them with one year of valuable professional experience upon graduation.
