Mission:

The MAC program at City University of Seattle aims to cultivate counselors who are change agents, social justice advocates, and perpetual learners. The program emphasizes advancing anti-racist counselor education and promoting social justice across clinical mental health and professional school counseling tracks.


Objectives:

  • Prepare counselors with knowledge and skills in professional orientation, ethics, cultural diversity, human growth, career development, helping relationships, group work, assessment, and research.
  • Develop multicultural and social justice competent leaders who tailor their approach to clients' cultural worldview and advocate for social justice.
  • Equip counselors with the knowledge, skills, and experience to provide quality mental health services in various settings.

Program Description:

The program utilizes a practitioner-scholar model to train well-rounded Clinical Mental Health Counselors (CMHCs), Professional School Counselors (PSCs), and Marriage, Couple, and Family Counselors (MCFCs) for the realities of day-to-day practice in a diverse world. Emphasis is placed on practical application of theory, case conceptualization skills, ethical awareness, appreciation of diversity, and self-awareness. The program curriculum features a broad range of clinical issues delivered by practitioner faculty, with supported clinical experiences focused on service delivery and development of a coherent theoretical and ethical framework for practice.

All three MAC tracks (CMHC, MCFC, & PSC) share the same core curriculum:

  • Core CACREP Areas (35 credits):
  • Multicultural Counseling
  • Human Growth and Development
  • Professional Ethics and Law
  • Career Counseling in Clinical Settings
  • Testing and Assessment
  • Counseling Theory
  • Group Counseling
  • Required Courses Outside of Core (36 credits):
  • Systemic Theory: Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling
  • Research Methods and Statistics
  • Crisis, Grief, & Trauma Counseling
  • Introduction to Psychopathology and Psychopharmacology
  • Addictions and Co-Occurring Counseling
  • Human Sexuality
  • Introduction to the Counseling Practice
  • Capstone I
  • Each track then has 14 credits of specific Training Requirements.

Additional Required Depth Coursework:

  • CMHC: Choose one from Child and Adolescent Counseling or Counseling Older Adults
  • MCFC: Couples Counseling
  • PSC: Child and Adolescent Counseling

Assessment:
