Program Overview

The Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) Fitting and Machining from Ara Institute of Canterbury is a part-time program designed to equip students with the technical and problem-solving skills needed for mechanical engineering environments. Through a combination of core and elective courses, students learn about mechanical engineering principles, practices, and processes, as well as precision machining and welding techniques. The program is delivered through an apprenticeship managed by Ara and is currently free for domestic students until December 2022.

Degree Overview:

Outline:

Program Structure:

• Part-time program, completed within 4 years.
• Delivered through Ara to individuals employed in the engineering and manufacturing industry via an Ara-managed apprenticeship.

Course Schedule:

• Consists of core and elective courses across three levels (Level 3, 4, and 6).
• Level 3:
• Core courses: Mechanical Engineering Principles 1 & 2, Mechanical Engineering Practices 1 & 2, Mechanical Engineering Processes 1, Strand Based Project and/or Task 1 & 2.
• Level 4:
• Core courses: Strand Based Positional Welding, Site Installation, Mechanical Engineering Principles 3, Precision Machining 1 & 2, Strand Based Project Planning and/or Task 3.
• Elective courses: Management Practice, Advanced Fluid Power, Advanced Machining and Measurement.
• Level 6:
• Elective courses: CAM Programming 1.

• Mechanical Engineering Principles 1 & 2:
• Covers topics like mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.

• Covers hand tools, power tools, machine tools, and workshop safety procedures.
• Mechanical Engineering Processes 1:
• Introduces various manufacturing processes like casting, forging, welding, and machining.

• Precision Machining 1:
• Develops proficiency in precision machining techniques, including turning, milling, drilling, and grinding.
• Strand Based Project and/or Task 1 & 2:
• Provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to real-world projects.

Level 4:

• Strand Based Positional Welding:
• Specializes in positional welding techniques for various applications.
