Program Overview


This Level 4 program provides a foundation in human biology, cell biology, chemistry, and mathematics for students aspiring to pursue higher studies in medical imaging, sport science, or applied science. Upon completion, students are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Medical Imaging, Bachelor of Applied Science (Sports Science), or New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science (Level 5).

Study and Career Preparation - Medical Imaging and Applied Science Pathway, Level 4


Degree Overview:

This program prepares students for higher-level studies in medical imaging, sport science, or applied science. It serves as a pathway for the Bachelor of Medical Imaging, the Bachelor of Applied Science (Sports Science), and the New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science (Level 5).


Program Objectives:

  • Provide a solid foundation in human biology, cell biology, chemistry, and mathematics.

  • Enhance interpersonal and intrapersonal skills for success in tertiary study.

  • Can be completed in two years, full-time or part-time.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:


Domestic Students (including EU home students):

  • 40 credits NCEA Level 2: This includes 10 Level 1 Literacy credits and 10 Level 1 Mathematics credits (with a strength in Algebra for the Engineering Pathway and Numeracy for other pathways).
  • Statistics and probability do not count towards this mathematics credit requirement.
  • Alternative qualifications: Students can also gain entry through the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3).
  • International students (outside of the EU): If your qualifications are from outside of New Zealand, Ara will assess your qualifications for academic entry equivalency.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • IELTS: For international students whose first language is not English, an overall IELTS score of 5.5 (with at least 5.5 in each band) is required.
  • Exemption: New Zealand Citizens and Permanent Residents do not need to provide additional evidence of English language skills.
  • Alternative entry: If you don't meet the academic requirements but have equivalent skills from work or life experience, you may be eligible for alternative entry.
  • Credit recognition: You may be eligible for credit recognition if you have previous relevant experience or study credits.
