Overview:

This program is designed to help students develop their te reo Māori skills and knowledge, enabling them to communicate independently in familiar and less familiar aspects of te ao Māori. Participants will gain a broad understanding of how the language connects to the land, environment, prominent places, people, histories, and stories. They will also extend their understanding and application of knowledge in varying contexts and begin to develop independent language production.


Objectives:

  • Develop te reo Māori skills and knowledge for independent communication in familiar and less familiar aspects of te ao Māori.
  • Gain a broad understanding of the language's connection to the land, environment, prominent places, people, histories, and stories.
  • Extend understanding and application of knowledge in varying contexts.
  • Develop independent language production.
  • Contribute to community and cultural roles, such as preparing a whare and/or marae for hui, kaiwaiata, and working in the marae kitchen and dining room.
  • Speak te reo in homes within whānau and communities.
  • Role-model the use of te reo among whānau and hapū in various settings.

Description:

This course emphasizes engagement with local marae and culturally immersive experiences. The delivery combines in-classroom and local marae-based experiences. The inclusion of marae provides authentic, meaningful engagement with local Māori communities, ensuring mana whenua are known people and retain the role of representing themselves.
