Program Overview

This foundation year program provides a comprehensive introduction to art and design, offering a range of modules in both disciplines. Through practical assessments, studio-based learning, and industry guest lectures, students develop their skills and explore potential career paths in various art and design fields. The program prepares students for further study in BA (Hons) degrees in specific art and design disciplines.

Year 0 Compulsory Modules:

• Major Project (40 Credits): This module allows students to write their own project description, focusing on their chosen specialisms and exploring multiple ideas and potential solutions.
• Team Challenge (20 Credits): Students collaborate in teams to complete challenging creative projects that introduce them to both the art and design pathways.
They will develop skills through working in different ways and with diverse media.
• Theory & Practice In Art & Design (20 Credits): This module provides an introduction to major developments in art, design, photography, illustration, and comic art from the 20th century onwards, exploring how global events and technological advancements have influenced these fields.

Year 0 Optional Modules:

• Ideas Generation in Art (20 Credits): Students are introduced to the art pathway through technical instruction workshops in various media such as wood, metal, photography, textiles, ceramics, and digital processes.
The focus is on experimenting and generating multiple ideas and possibilities for creative expression and storytelling.
• Ideas Generation in Design (20 Credits): Similar to the art module, this focuses on technical instruction experiences within the design pathway, encouraging exploration and experimentation in different areas.
The aim is to generate multiple ideas and explore potential solutions within design disciplines.
• Problem-Solving in Art (20 Credits): Students apply their knowledge and skills gained throughout the semester to specific art disciplines.
This involves taster sessions from each of the 12 degree courses available in later years, allowing them to test out different approaches and gain insights into various artistic careers.
• Problem-Solving in Design (20 Credits): Following a similar approach to the art module, this module focuses on applying acquired skills and knowledge within various design disciplines.
Students participate in taster sessions representing different degree programs to explore potential pathways and professional opportunities.

Assessments include:
• A portfolio of completed artwork presented following specific requirements.
• Sketchbooks and workbooks demonstrating research, brainstorming, and development of ideas.
• Technical exercises showcasing skills and mastery of specific techniques and equipment.
• Written essays or reports exploring the context of projects.
• Individual presentations accompanied by supporting materials.

Teaching:

• The curriculum is strongly based on studio practices.
• Activities involve project-based work within studios, focusing on different areas according to chosen specialization.
• Group and individual projects provide opportunities for collaboration, presentations, and individual exploration of interests.

Other:

• This foundation year prepares students for a range of BA (Hons) degrees in various art and design disciplines, including: 3D Designer Maker, Animation, Cartoon and Comic Arts, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Product Design, Stop Motion Animation and Puppet Making, Surface Pattern Design, Textile Surfaces, and Transport Design.

Tuition fees for BA (Hons)-Full-time, with a foundation year Study option UK / Channel Islands International Full-time £9,250 for your first year subsequent years will be charged at the University standard rate £16,750 for your first year subsequent years will be charged at the University standard rate
