Program Overview

The PGCE Home Economics with Food & Nutrition & Nutrition & Food Science program is a one-year, full-time program that prepares students for a career in teaching these subjects at the post-primary level in Northern Ireland. The program includes 24 weeks of school-based placements and utilizes a variety of teaching methods. Graduates are prepared for careers in a variety of educational settings, including schools, further education colleges, and community organizations.

• The modules included in the course are:
• School Experience 1
(focusing on acquiring basic teaching skills)
• School Experience 2
(further development of teaching skills and demonstration of competence)
• Improving Practice in Religious Education
(optional, further developing competency in teaching RE at Key Stage 3)
• The program includes 24 weeks of school-based placements, including one week in a primary school and two 11-12 week placements in post-primary schools.

Assessment:

• Assessment methods include coursework assignments, examinations, and presentations.
• Assessment criteria are aligned with the learning outcomes of each module.
• The program requires students to achieve competence in the professional themes covered in each semester through a problem-based learning activity.

• Students must successfully complete an application and interview process to be admitted to the program.
• The program includes a mandatory induction field trip.
• Successful applicants must apply for Access NI clearance and complete an Occupational Health Check.
• Students are expected to have their own laptop/iPad or equivalent for use on the course.
