Participants will develop an in-depth critical understanding of the content of international human rights standards and the various enforcement mechanisms.

  • Enhance participants' awareness of current issues and developments in international human rights law.

Content:

The course explores key themes such as:

  • Philosophies of Human Rights: Examining the philosophical underpinnings and origins of human rights, including questions of origin, types, and holders of these rights.
  • This discussion introduces participants to various philosophical debates, such as universal rights vs. cultural relativism and natural vs. positive rights. This includes examining sources of the law, enforcement mechanisms, institutions involved in its administration, and the extent of its enforcement.
  • Critical analysis of different enforcement mechanisms and instruments at various levels.

Structure:

The program is divided into two sections:


Philosophies of Human Rights: This week covers the fundamental concepts of human rights, including their origins, types, and holders.


Assessment:


Methods:

The program utilizes 100% coursework assessment, consisting of two essays of 3000-4000 words each.


Criteria:

Essays are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of a comprehensive understanding of international human rights law.
  • Critical analysis of relevant legal principles and concepts.
  • Application of international human rights law to real-world scenarios.
  • Clarity, coherence, and effective communication of arguments.

  • The course takes place on Thursdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm during Semester 1 in September 2023.
