Program Overview
The program offers two concentrations: Culture and Pedagogy, and prepares students for careers in fields such as foreign service, education, and translation. With a dedicated faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and a focus on experiential learning, the program equips students with the skills and knowledge to engage with China in a meaningful way.
Program Outline
The program focuses on providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in Chinese language environments with cultural competence. Additionally, the program introduces students to the fundamentals of sinology and East Asian studies, preparing them for further scholarly, educational, and professional pursuits.
The program offers two areas of concentration:
- Culture (literature, linguistics, religion): This concentration provides students with in-depth command of spoken, aural, and oral Mandarin Chinese, as well as written literary Chinese.
- Pedagogy: This concentration is designed for students who want to teach modern Chinese in K-16 environments. Students are trained in communicative and task-based language teaching approaches, as well as developing solid foundations in teaching Chinese literacy, pronunciation, and linguistic systems.

aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage with China in a meaningful and impactful way.
Outline:
The program requires the completion of 30 credit hours
and includes a thesis or an applied project course.
Required coursework:
- Core (3 credit hours): Choose either CHI 501 or JPN 501 Proseminar: East Asian Humanities
- Concentration (3 credit hours): Choose either SLC 596 Second Language Methodologies or CHI 598 Topic: History of the Chinese Language
- Electives (15 credit hours)
- Culminating Experience (6 credit hours): Choose either CHI 593 Applied Project or CHI 599 Thesis
