The New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing is a 40-week, Level 3 program designed to equip you with the fundamental skills required to work in the collision repair and automotive refinishing industry. This program will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the key principles and practices involved in the repair of vehicles involved in collisions, including panel beating, painting, and refinishing.

This program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience to ensure you graduate with the necessary skills to succeed in the collision repair and automotive refinishing industry. You will learn from experienced instructors and work on real-world projects, allowing you to gain practical experience and build your confidence.

Program Content:

  • Health, Safety and Tools: Learn about safety regulations, workshop equipment, and safe working practices in the industry.
  • Light Engineering: Master the use of hand and power tools, and workshop engineering equipment to complete basic tasks.
  • Critical Vehicle Systems: Identify, remove, and replace critical vehicle systems components like brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
  • Assess for Appropriate Repair Procedure: Develop skills to assess vehicles for minor repairs and select the appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Repair Minor Panel Damage: Learn how to repair minor panel damage on a motor vehicle using appropriate tools and techniques.

Structure:

  • Class Time: 21 hours per week, delivered through in-person, online, and in-work learning, along with block courses at UCOL.
  • Study Time: 14 hours per week for independent study.
  • Part-time options: Available upon discussion with UCOL.

Course Schedule:

  • February intake: February 12, 2024 – November 15, 2024
  • July intake: August 5, 2024 – May 9, 2025

Individual Modules with Descriptions:

  • Health, Safety and Tools (15 Credits): This module provides essential knowledge about safety regulations, workshop equipment, and safe working practices in the automotive industry.
  • Cooling and HVAC (10 Credits): This module focuses on the removal and replacement of HVAC and cooling systems components, along with proper storage procedures.
  • Vehicle Exterior and Interior Component (20 Credits): This module teaches you how to select and use tools and equipment for removing and replacing vehicle interior and exterior components, as well as storing them according to company policies.
  • Critical Vehicle Systems (15 Credits): This module focuses on identifying, removing, and replacing critical vehicle systems components, including brakes, steering, suspension, safety systems, and electrical components, following manufacturer recommendations.
  • Repair Minor Panel Damage (15 Credits): This module teaches you how to repair minor panel damage on a motor vehicle using the proper tools, products, and equipment.

Entry Requirements:


Domestic Students:

  • NCEA Level 1
  • OR
  • Equivalent academic achievement
  • OR
  • On a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Executive Dean.
  • AND A Class 1 full driver's licence (or working towards) is recommended on entry to this programme.
  • Basic computing skills are an advantage.
  • English language proficiency: If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.0 with no band score less than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL).
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (ie combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).

International Students:

  • In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international students.
  • English language proficiency: International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL).
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (ie combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).
  • Applicants under 20 years of age: For international applicants under 20 years of age who do not hold NCEA, International Academic Qualifications Entry Criteria apply.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Domestic Students: If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.0 with no band score less than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL).
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (ie combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).
