Program Outline

Participants will work together to write, record, and perform an original song, gaining valuable experience in the music industry.

  • Structure: The program spans five weeks, with one day per week dedicated to music-related activities (Fridays).
  • Course Schedule:
  • Palmerston North:
  • August 9, 2024 - September 6, 2024.
  • Whanganui: Dates for 2024 are still to be confirmed.
  • Songwriting: Participants will learn the basics of songwriting, including melody, harmony, and lyrics.
  • They will work collaboratively to create an original song that reflects their interests and abilities.
  • Recording: Learners will receive instruction and hands-on experience in using UCOL's recording studios and equipment.
  • They will learn the basics of recording techniques and how to produce a professional- sounding track.
  • Performance: The program culminates in a live performance of the students' original song.
  • Participants will gain experience in stage presence and delivery, working together to present their music to an audience.

Assessment:

  • Learners are assessed based on their participation, collaboration, and the quality of their final performance and recorded track.

Teaching:

  • Instruction is provided by experienced music professionals with expertise in songwriting, recording, and performance.
  • The program utilizes UCOL's dedicated recording and editing studios, providing learners with access to high-quality equipment and facilities.
