Program Overview


This night class welding program provides an introduction to basic welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, OAW, and arc welding. It covers safety, equipment, and techniques for welding various metals. The program is designed for upskilling, professional development, or as a refresher course, and offers hands-on learning in a practical environment with industry-experienced tutors.

Program Outline

  • Use the program as a welding refresher or for professional development.
  • Gain practical experience with different welding processes, machines, metals, and problem-solving.
  • Avoid weld defects.
  • Program Description:
  • The program is offered three times a year.
  • It is currently under review to ensure it is portable, consistent, and aligned with industry needs.
  • Limited number of learners per session.
  • Higher level training and welding certificate programs may be offered in the future.

  • Health & Safety
  • Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW) - Stick welding
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) - MIG welding
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) - TIG welding for stainless steel and/or aluminium
  • Oxy-acetylene Welding/Cutting (demonstrations/practical activities)
  • Plasma cutting (demonstrations/practical activities)
  • Individual interests and small projects
  • Structure:
  • 8 weeks, one night per week
  • 5:30 - 8:30pm
  • First four nights cover specific topics:
  • Night 1: Health & Safety and MMAW
  • Night 2: GMAW
  • Night 3: GTAW
  • Night 4: Oxy-acetylene Welding/Cutting
  • Remaining four nights cover all topics, including individual interests and small projects
  • Module 2: Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW):
  • Introduces the basics of stick welding, including equipment, techniques, and safety precautions.
  • Module 3: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW):
  • Covers MIG welding techniques, equipment, and applications.
  • Module 4: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW):
  • Introduces TIG welding for stainless steel and/or aluminium, including techniques, equipment, and safety precautions.
  • Module 5: Oxy-acetylene Welding/Cutting:
  • Demonstrations and practical activities on oxy-acetylene welding and cutting techniques.
  • Module 6: Plasma Cutting:
  • Demonstrations and practical activities on plasma cutting techniques.

  • Learners must supply their own steel cap boots and 100% cotton overalls.
  • UCOL will provide a welding helmet, gloves, ear muffs, and safety glasses for the duration of the program.
  • The program is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
  • Universal College of Learning Limited, a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga, is accredited to teach the program.
