This program prepares individuals to obtain the Maritime New Zealand Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) certificate, enabling them to operate small commercial vessels within restricted limits. Upon completion, graduates are equipped for careers as skippers on passenger vessels, non-passenger vessels, and fishing vessels.

This program provides a flexible learning approach, allowing individuals to study while maintaining their existing careers. It covers theoretical and practical aspects of maritime operations, preparing graduates to operate as skippers on small commercial vessels.


Outcomes:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Perform skipper duties on vessels under 12 meters in length carrying up to 19 passengers within restricted limits.
  • Operate fishing vessels under 12 meters within enclosed and inshore fishing limits.
  • Progress to skippering larger vessels with further qualifications.
  • Offered by Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), now part of Te Pūkenga.

Structure:

Combination of distance learning (19 weeks, 10 hours per week) and a 5-week on-campus block course in Nelson.

  • STCW Elementary First Aid
  • Attend the chosen block course in Nelson.
  • Complete the 19-week online learning modules alongside sea service.
