Program Overview
The Nijenhuis Geometry PhD program at Loughborough University provides advanced training in the field, covering core concepts, differential geometry, and algebra. Students conduct original research under expert supervision, leading to a thesis that contributes to the field. Graduates pursue careers in academia, research, and data-driven industries.
Program Outline
- Nijenhuis Geometry II: Advanced topics in Nijenhuis Geometry, building on the foundations established in the first module.
- Differential Geometry I: Provides a solid grounding in the principles and methods of differential geometry, essential for understanding Nijenhuis structures.
- Differential Geometry II: Examines advanced topics in differential geometry relevant to the study of Nijenhuis manifolds and operators.
- Algebra I: Develops the necessary algebraic background, including topics such as Lie algebras, tensor algebras, and exterior differential systems.
- Algebra II: Explores advanced algebraic tools and techniques applicable to the study of Nijenhuis structures and related geometric objects.
Optional modules
Students may select a minimum of two additional modules (30 credits each) from a range of advanced topics related to their research interests and project. Available options may include:
- Symplectic Geometry
- Riemannian Geometry
- Complex Geometry
- Geometric Topology
- Geometric Analysis
- Algebraic Topology
- Homological Algebra
- Representation Theory
Research project
The final component of the PhD is the independent research project. This research project will be supervised by Dr. Alexey Bolsinov.
Assessment:
Coursework (30 credits)
Students are assessed through coursework assignments and examinations in each of the taught modules. The coursework assessment contributes 30 credits towards the overall PhD degree.
Research Thesis (85 credits):
The primary component of the PhD assessment is a written thesis based on the original research conducted throughout the program. The research project and thesis are expected to demonstrate a significant and original contribution to the field of Nijenhuis geometry. This research thesis contributes 85 credits toward the PhD degree.
Teaching:
Lectures and Seminars:
Teaching for this PhD program typically includes a combination of lectures and seminars delivered by expert researchers in the field of Nijenhuis Geometry. The lectures introduce core concepts, present important results, and provide theoretical frameworks. Seminars offer opportunities for in-depth discussions, exploration of advanced topics, and critical analysis of current research.
Research Supervision:
Students benefit from close, individual supervision from Dr. Alexey Bolsinov throughout their research project. The research supervisor provides guidance and mentoring, facilitates access to research resources, and offers ongoing feedback and support as the project progresses.
Individual Research Project:
A critical element of the program, the individual research project allows students to apply the acquired knowledge and theoretical frameworks to conduct original research in a specific area of Nijenhuis Geometry. This research project is undertaken under the supervision of a designated faculty member.
Careers:
Graduates from the Nijenhuis Geometry PhD program are well-equipped with specialized expertise and advanced research skills applicable to various academic and research careers. Potential career paths might include:
- Research Fellow
- Postdoctoral researcher
- Lecturer/Professor in Mathematics or related disciplines
- Mathematical modeler/analyst in data-driven quantitative fields and industries
Other:
- The Loughborough University Department of Mathematical Sciences is actively engaged in research collaborations and partnerships with several leading international institutions and researchers in the field of Nijenhuis Geometry.
- Students have the opportunity to participate in research conferences, seminars, and workshops, providing valuable platforms for presenting their work, exchanging ideas with the research community, and establishing professional connections.
