• The Market, Literary Prizes and Canon Formation:
This module examines the relationship between the book market, literary prizes, and the canon of contemporary literature. It analyzes the operation and significance of literary prizes, especially the Booker Prize, and explores the correlation between popularity, prize-worthiness, and the academic study of literary works.
• Writing in the Community: This module focuses on planning, curating, promoting, and hosting a literary festival at the end of semester two.
Students will develop practical skills in event planning, organization, logistics, and scheduling, and participate in discussion-based decision-making for choosing authors, designing the festival's theme and tone, and drafting interview questions.
• 21st-Century U.S.
• Literature and Culture: This module introduces students to forms of literary, cinematic, and other cultural productions that have emerged in the United States during the 21st century.
Students are encouraged to consider the craft and techniques behind these texts and their relationship to their own creative and critical practice.
• Dissertation: This module offers students the opportunity to develop a significant piece of writing, alongside a sustained section of research-driven work related to their chosen creative project.
