Program Content and Structure
The MSc in Advanced Neonatal Practice is a two-year, online program designed for neonatal nurses and other healthcare professionals who want to develop their knowledge, skills and experience to become advanced practitioners in neonatal intensive care and transport. The program consists of eight core modules and a scientific paper module. The core modules are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the care of the neonate, including the following:
- Clinical assessment of the foetus, neonate and young infant
- Pathophysiology and management of neonatal medical conditions
- Pathophysiology and management of neonatal surgical conditions
- Non-medical independent prescribing for the neonate
- Decision-making, communication and ethics in neonatology
- Transition to advanced neonatal practice: leadership and management
- Quality improvement and research methods in neonatology
- Ergonomics & Human Factors in Neonatal Medicine and Transport
Individual Modules
Module 1 - Clinical assessment of the foetus, neonate and young infant
This module will provide students with the skills and knowledge to assess the health of a newborn baby. Students will learn how to perform a physical exam, identify signs of illness, and develop a plan of care.
- Module 2 - Pathophysiology and management of neonatal medical conditions
- Module 3 - Pathophysiology and management of neonatal surgical conditions
- Module 4 - Non-medical independent prescribing for the neonate Students will develop their skills and knowledge to independently prescribe medications for neonates, ensuring safe and effective medication management.
- Module 5 - Decision-making, communication and ethics in neonatology This module equips students to make sound decisions in complex situations, effectively communicate with colleagues and families and address ethical dilemmas in the care of newborns.
- Module 6 - Transition to advanced neonatal practice - Leadership and management This module provides the foundation for advanced practice roles, covering leadership and management skills, service development, professional development and the role of simulation in learning.
- Module 7 - Quality improvement and research methods in neonatology This module provides students with introductory knowledge and skills in quality improvement and research, allowing them to apply their knowledge to analyze and evaluate clinical practice and contribute to evidence-based decision-making in neonatal care.
- Module 8 - Ergonomics & Human Factors in neonatal medicine and transport This module explores the role of ergonomics and human factors principles in improving the safety and well-being of infants and staff in neonatal medicine and transport environments.
Scientific Paper
Students will undertake a research project on a topic of their choice. The project will involve conducting a literature review, collecting and analyzing data and writing a scientific report.
