This degree focuses on preparing you to work with young children in a variety of settings, including day nurseries, pre-schools, special schools, children's centres, and family support organizations. By focusing on real-world learning and practical experience, this program provides a solid foundation for a future career in the field. The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education qualification is accepted as 'full and relevant' by the Department for Education (DfE) Early Years Qualification List (EYQL). This allows graduates to work in an early years setting or to be counted in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) staff:child ratios.
Outline
This program is offered in two formats:
- Full-time (3 years)
- Part-time (6 years)
All modules throughout the program are designed to help you develop professional skills through assignments and assessments reflecting placement-related tasks.
Year 1
- Focuses on foundational knowledge and understanding early childhood education in its social and historical contexts.
- You will explore your own experiences in education, critical theory, the fields of education, care and family support.
- Develop skills and knowledge in promoting children's well-being, working with young children to explore their identity, values and voice, and design stimulating learning environments to observe children at play.
- In year one, you can choose to visit various childhood settings for 25 days of observation.
Year 2
This year also focuses on developing effective interventions for supporting diverse populations of young children.
- The second year involves visiting early childhood settings for 30 days of observation.
Year 3
- You will conduct independent research projects to enhance your practice and explore various concepts within early childhood, such as cultural, political, or economic influences on children's lives.
- In year three, you will participate in 25 days of observation in early childhood settings.
- You may choose to study abroad in your second year and gain an international perspective about working with young children. Funding options are also available through The Turing Scheme.
