Program Overview


The King's College London Punjabi Level 1, Part 3 program is designed for students with basic Punjabi knowledge. It covers spoken Punjabi, reading and writing in Gurmukhi script, and an introduction to Sikhism. Structure:

The King's College London Punjabi Level 1, Part 3 program is designed for students who already have some basic knowledge of the language. The program consists of three sections: spoken Punjabi, reading and writing in Gurmukhi script, and an introduction to Sikhism.

  • Spoken Punjabi (60 hours) focuses on developing conversational skills and basic grammar rules.
  • Reading & Writing in Gurmukhi (60 hours) teaches students to identify and write Gurmukhi letters and read simple Gurmukhi texts.

Introduction to Sikhism (35 hours)

explores Sikh history, philosophy and culture.


Content:

The program is divided into 10 weeks, with 10 hours of instruction each week. There are 3 instructors involved in this course: Dr. Rajwant Singh Chima teaches the spoken component of the course.

  • Dr. Chima has been with the university since 2019 and is an associate tutor in the department.
  • Dr. Chima is currently working on his PhD in comparative religion.
  • Ms. Gurdeep Kaur Hayer teaches reading and writing.
  • Ms.Hayer has a master's in education and is currently a PhD student.
  • Dr. Jasbir Singh teaches the Introduction to Sikhism portion of the program.
  • Dr. Jasbir Singh has a PhD in history and is a lecturer in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King's College.

Assessment

Students are assessed through a variety of methods, including written assignments, oral presentations and participation in class.

  • The written assignments cover topics such as grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Two written assignments will be given throughout this course.
  • The due dates will be decided during the classes.
  • The oral presentations allow students to practice their spoken skills and to share their knowledge of the subject.
  • There will be two presentations throughout this program.
  • Students are allowed to pick a subject of their choosing to present on.
  • Participation in class is also important, as it allows students to ask questions, share their ideas and get feedback from their peers and instructors.

Teaching:

  • This course uses a variety of teaching methods to ensure that students with different learning preferences have the best chance of success:
  • 1. The instructors use a combination of lectures, discussions, group activities and individual work. The instructors use technology and online resources to supplement their teaching.

Other:

  • Students are expected to attend all classes and to complete all assigned work.
  • However, it may be helpful for learners to have some previous experience with learning a South Asian language, such as Hindi, Urdu or Sanskrit.
