Natural Building Materials Design | MADE Program
Degree Overview:
This program focuses on the exploration of natural building materials and techniques, both traditional and contemporary. Students will delve into Mediterranean vernacular building methods and learn about innovative sustainable solutions. Through a partnership with Guglielmino Cooperativa, participants gain hands-on experience with various techniques, including rammed earth, Terra Migaki, Cocciopesto, and Cob.
Outline:
The program is offered in two formats: a 6-day and an 11-day workshop.
6-Day Workshop:
- Day 1: Introduction to natural building materials by Marginal Studio, presentation of workshop objectives, and a visit to the Guglielmino Cooperativa factory.
- Day 2: Introduction to raw materials (clay, lime, natural fibers) by Guglielmino, live demonstration of material processing, and student experimentation.
- Day 3-4: Design project development, including research, proposal, and conceptual development.
- Day 5-6: Project development with clay, lime, and natural fibers to create a scale model of the design concept.
11-Day Workshop:
- Day 7-10: Continuation of the 6-day workshop with additional focus on applying the techniques and developing a 1:1 prototype of the design proposal.
Teaching:
The program is taught by experts from Marginal Studio and Guglielmino Cooperativa. The teaching methods involve a combination of lectures, demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and individual guidance.
