About Program

Program Overview

This six-day workshop introduces participants to the art of mosaic making, covering basic techniques, color theory, and material preparation. Through hands-on experience, participants create two mosaics, exploring both direct and indirect techniques. The program also includes a guided tour of Roman mosaics in Sicily, providing historical context and inspiration.

Program Outline

This six-day workshop offers an introduction to the fascinating art of mosaic making. Participants will explore the basic techniques, delve into the theories of color, and get hands-on experience with the materials used in creating stunning mosaics. They will also learn about different mosaic styles, focusing on Roman and Byzantine examples found in Sicily.

Objectives:

  • Mastering the basic techniques of mosaic making
  • Understanding the principles of color theory
  • Identifying and preparing various materials (stones and marbles)
  • Utilizing tools for shaping and cutting
  • Gaining experience with direct and indirect mosaic techniques

Content and Structure:

Week 1:

  • Day 1: Introduction to mosaic history, tools, and materials.
  • Students learn about adhesives, grouts, and practice cutting with traditional tools.
  • Days 2-4: The first mosaic is completed.
  • Day 5: Assembling the mosaic in the morning.
  • In the afternoon, participants take a guided tour of the Roman Villa of Tellaro near Noto to experience Roman mosaics firsthand.

Optional Second Week:

Days 1-5:

This optional workshop focuses on the "indirect technique," popular since the mid-19th century, where a flat surface is needed. Building on the previous week's knowledge, students dedicate 40 hours to develop a personal 40x40cm artwork (or use a provided sketch) and create the mosaic using this advanced method.

Assessment:

The assessment in this program is likely focused on practical skill development and project completion. The process of completing the two mosaics, especially the more detailed one in the second week, likely serves as a primary form of assessment.

Teaching:

The program employs a hands-on, practical approach to teaching. The instructors guide and provide individual feedback throughout the process, ensuring proper technique and understanding.

Careers:

While this program focuses on developing core mosaic making skills, it also opens doors to potential career paths in various creative fields. Graduates can pursue opportunities as:

  • Mosaic Artists: Creating original artworks or commissions
  • Mosaic Restoration Specialists: Preserving and restoring historical mosaics
  • Designers: Incorporating mosaic techniques in interior design, furniture, and other decorative elements
  • It emphasizes traditional techniques while introducing contemporary applications, making it relevant for various artistic pursuits. The program also facilitates learning within a supportive community environment, offering the chance to connect with like-minded individuals and exchange knowledge.
