Program Overview


This 5-day short course from City & Guilds of London Art School focuses on drawing and painting techniques, from classical to contemporary approaches. Led by artist Kate Dunn, participants will explore observational skills, material expression, and the use of color. The course includes all teaching materials and culminates in a self-directed drawing or painting with a group critique.

Drawing and Painting: Figuration to Abstraction

This 5-day short course offered by City & Guilds of London Art School is designed for beginners and those with some experience. It will be led by critically-acclaimed artist Kate Dunn and will take place from July 8th to 12th, 2024. The course will run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and costs £560.


Details:

  • The course will focus on a blend of classical and current approaches to drawing.
  • Participants will learn both classical and contemporary approaches to drawing, including observational skills, material and drawing processes, and techniques that challenge and test aspects of space, composition, and material expression.
  • The course will start with making a copy of an historical artwork using pencil, learning the techniques of sight-size and mass drawing.
  • Participants will then move on to using willow and compressed charcoal to try out a series of drawing techniques to respond to the representational and imagined world, using a variety of materials such as cotton wool, sandpaper, nails, and tape.
  • The course will consider the use of color in artwork and how it relates to the world around us.
  • The final exploration will question whether to observe or break the rules of composition in artwork.
  • On the last day, participants will have the opportunity to make a self-directed drawing or painting and participate in a group critique.
  • All teaching materials are included in the course fee, but participants are asked to bring some art materials, including a few empty jars.
  • Details will be sent closer to the course date. Participants should also bring their meals and wear clothes they don't mind getting messy.
